Xiaoping HONG
(2007 Paul and May Chu UG Research Award)
He demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the research issues, and was able to digest the background knowledge of his experiments in a limited period of time. Then he performed extensive experimental work and independent analysis on the position dependence of optical emissions from multiple quantum well light emitting diodes. The amount and quality of his work is truly exceptional for someone at his age. He was able to propose his own model to explain the novel experimental observations and suggest further research to test the model. The research process is a fine example of how systematic investigations, logical reasoning, and model formulation can be integrated in scientific discoveries. The Scholarship Committee recognized his high potentials in future experimental research.
